Indonesia
Maluku Islands
Maluku province comprises more than 1,000 islands, most of which are uninhabited, for it sits across one of the world's most active volcano belts. The indigenous people are a cross between the Malay-based cultures of west Indonesia and those of Melanesia.
Blessed with incredible sea gardens, idyllic, tropical beaches and wonderful landscapes rich with a variety of plant and animal life, these rugged, forest-coated and mountainous islands are home to the rackertail kingfisher, the red-crested Moluccan cockatoo and other vivid-coloured lorikeets and parrots.
Formerly known as the Spice Islands, you enter the Maluku group through the provincial capital, Ambon, which receives regular flights from most parts of Indonesia.
