Dangerous goods
To ensure the safety of the aircraft, there are certain things that are allowed on board Air Canada and its regional airlines and others that are not. Read on to make sure your luggage is safe.

Camping stoves, lawn mowers and other
gasoline powered equipment

Fuel containers, once used, are not allowed to travel as checked baggage. As a result the following is Air Canada’s policy for the carriage of gas-powered equipment.

Camping stoves
Air Canada accepts new camping stoves as checked baggage if they are unopened and in the original packaging. However for used stoves, only those with a detachable fuel tank with the fuel tank removed are allowed. If your stove does not have a detachable fuel tank, contact the Air Canada Cargo office in your area.

Lawn mowers, chain saws, etc.
For items where the fuel tank is a permanent part of the equipment, e.g. lawn mowers, chain saws, etc. only new products in the original unopened packaging can travel as baggage. For used equipment in this category contact the Air Canada Cargo office in your area.

Dry ice

Dry ice is often used in the packaging of perishable items to keep them cool. Things such as fish or seafood are often packed in dry ice. Items packed in dry ice can travel as as either carry-on or checked baggage (AirBC only as carry-on), provided:

  • the dry ice does not exceed 2 kilos or 4.4 lbs.
  • the box, carton or container is leakproof and free of dents or holes.

If you’re travelling with dry ice you’ll need to arrive at the airport at least one hour before the departure time shown on your ticket. Should you decide to check the bag there’s a declaration form to be filled out describing the contents of the package and the amount of dry ice in it.

Firearms/Ammunition

If you’re thinking of travelling with a firearm, here are the rules:

Firearms

  • Rifles, shotguns and handguns are accepted as checked baggage only, and must be unloaded
  • The ammunition must be packed separately (maximum 5 kilos or 11 lbs.)
  • The firearm must be packaged in a specially designed case. If you don’t have one, Air Canada will provide a ‘free rod and gun box’ which you are obliged to use
  • Before Air Canada accepts the firearm you must sign a declaration form attesting that the gun is unloaded.

Ammunition

  • Shells or cartridges are the only acceptable types of ammunition
  • Gunpowder and gunpowder pellets are not accepted
  • Ammunition must be packed securely in a strong container of wood, metal or fibreboard, plainly marked ‘ammunition’, or in the original inner carton
  • To avoid shock movement, the carton must be placed inside a suitcase and cushioned with clothing.

Hunting Equipment/Bounty/Antlers

Please arrive at the airport 90 minutes before your flight to ensure proper handling of these items. We regret that we cannot be responsible for loss, damage or delay during transport.

Antlers or Horns
Antlers or horns are accepted as checked baggage only.
The cost to transport antlers and/or horns on domestic, transborder and international flights is CA$150/US$100 plus applicable taxes for one-way travel. Smaller antlers wrapped in a larger set count as one item.

The antlers or horns must be clean and well-wrapped in absorbent material with all points covered.

For size restrictions on antlers or horns, please contact Air Canada Cargo.

Bounty
Meat or game must be transported in a leak-proof container or wrapped in absorbent material and then placed in plastic bags inside waxed cartons. Plastic bags alone are not sufficient for transport.
